Length about 9 mm. The abdomen is brownish, the male's wings appear faintly brown and clouded, whilst the female's wings are clear.

Habitat

 Usually found around hedgerows where they nectar on various species as well as taking other insects.

Length: Male 6 to 9.5 mm, Female 6.8 to 10 mm. This group of flies, sometimes called Dance flies, are predators of other insects, often tackling large prey, using their long, dagger-like snout. This species is distinguished from the very similar Empis tessellata by having red/brown thighs

This is quite a large dagger fly with a grey and pinkish appearance.

The sensible male only mates with a female who is eating, otherwise she will eat him...
